Views of the northern lights - KNX building automation takes care of glass igloos in demanding conditions
Greenland
Challenge

The Finnish company Savon Lasituote developed glass igloos located in Ilullisat at the coast of Greenland that provide a breathtaking 360 view through which visitors can enjoy the Northern lights and gaze at the passing icebergs. An igloo is not the easiest structure to maintain, especially in such challenging conditions. The customer required a sophisticated heating system managed through an easy to use high-quality building automation system, which is why they selected ABB i-bus® KNX.

Solution

The glass igloos are equipped with a wide range of KNX smart building technology allowing easy control of the floor and glass heating, as well as proper energy monitoring. The system can be monitored and managed remotely as well, significantly reducing the need for on-site maintenance.

Outcome

Once the system in the first igloo was set up, it was easy to replicate it for the others as well thanks to the copyability of KNX. Data from measurements, alarms, history and activity logs of fire detectors, temperatures of the rooms, floors, and heated glass is all captured and available to the hotel staff to analyze.

A glass igloo is not the easiest structure to maintain, but with the help of KNX it is made possible. All Smart Lucia igloos are equipped with a wide range of KNX smart building technology allowing easy control of the air heat pump, ventilation unit, floor heating and heating of the inside and outside of the glass roof, all of which can be monitored and managed remotely.
