SeAH Changwon Special Steel orders second ABB stirring technology for electric arc furnace in South Korea
South Korea
Challenge

SeAH Changwon Special Steel's integrated steel plant in South Korea produces 1.2 million tons of steel and 1 million tons of steel products annually, putting SeAH in the global top ten of special steel manufacturers. Their goal is to improve productivity and resource efficiency in electric arc furance.

Solution

SeAH has ordered a second ABB ArcSave electromagnetic stirrer to be installed on a 100-ton electric arc furnace following the success of the first installation in 2018 on a 70-ton electric arc furnace.

Outcome

SeAH expect to achieve benefits similar to their first installation where bottom gas stirring was replaced by electromagnetic stirring. Results include reduced bottom skull thickness from up to 1,000mm to less than 200mm. EAF productivity was improved by 5-7%, scrap handling costs reduced by 70-80%, electrical energy savings were3-4% and there were 40% savings on furnace refractory repairs.

“We have experienced the benefits of the ABB ArcSave first-hand and look forward to further improving the efficiency of our electric arc furnace steelmaking operations with a second installation,” said Eung-Sou Lee, Director, Production Division, SeAH Changwon Special Steel.
